The first early English apple variety, Discovery, could be in stores by August 8, according to English Apples and Pears chief executive Adrian Barlow.
“Harvesting looks as if it will be about 10 days later than last season,” he said. “Currently all varieties are below average size and orchards desperately need rain, particularly in the south east, where there have been drought conditions.”
Barlow issued what he called a “timely reminder” to growers that they should not chase high prices in the early part of the season by sending immature fruit to market.
