A fall in price from the Dutch is a sign of difficulties for bacon on the foodservice front.
Most of the industry expressed surprise at the fall in prices, particularly in the run up to Christmas. However Dutch traders said the market was still under pressure from a surplus of product.
One said: “They’re killing to capacity over in Holland which is having an effect on prices, particularly in foodservice which is also being inundated with product from all sources.”
However, the retail sector remained firm, he said.
Meanwhile, the Danes reported slightly brisker business, although one trader said the bigger players were not expecting serious business until at least next week.
