Waitrose has received its first English cherry tomatoes four days earlier than last year.
The Claree variety, packed in a 250g punnet, rsp £1.29, was in store on February 1, with the first fruit picked for assessment on January 26 at Margaret Nursery on the Isle of Wight.
Grower manager Roger Sims said: “We did not use any supplementary lighting to achieve this early start, we just depended on the above-average sunshine levels.
“It is another indication that the climate is becoming more stable over the winter and, coupled with the variety, this has ensured that the fruit is delivering fantastic flavour.”
