The English lamb industry is eyeing up Algeria as a potential export market. Eblex has led a mission to explore supplying fresh lamb and frozen mutton to Algeria, a key gateway between Europe and Africa. Algerians eat about 100,000 tonnes of sheepmeat every year, but the UK has not exported lamb there since the 1980s.

“Algeria has great potential for sheepmeat exports,” said Eblex export manager JP Garnier. Although its rate of duty is currently high, Algeria is due to fall into line with an EU trade agreement.
