The Co-operative Group has launched what it claimed were Britain’s first fully degradable plastic bread wrappers.
The Co-op claims the new bag will fully degrade to carbon dioxide, water and a small amount of organic residue after four years, whereas standard wrapping can take 100 years to disintegrate. It calculated that the 1.67 billion non-degradable bread bags produced in the UK each year are equivalent in weight to 30 jumbo jets.
The eco-friendly bags will wrap the 55 million own label loaves the Co-op sells a year and reduce non-degradable household waste by 346 tonnes.
