AF Blakemore has said egg sales at its Spar stores have soared by 43% following moves to improve its fresh top-up shopping offer.

Sales had grown after eggs had been given more space on shelves and offered on constant £1 promotions on gondola ends as part of Blakemore's Pounds Down initiative.

Blakemore said it was encouraging its Spar stores to improve their fresh and chilled offer and be less reliant on sales of tobacco and newspapers.

"Eggs have become a major part of Spar retailers' businesses and are a key element in the development of Blakemore's push to succeed in the fresh top-up shopping market," said Ged Carter, marketing director at Blakemore Spar Distribution.

"The £1 price point has been instrumental in gaining attention for our year-long egg campaign, with customers becoming accustomed to look for this £1 price deal."
