Egg sales have risen by almost 4% over the past year, with consumption at its highest level since the early 1980s, according to the British Egg Industry Council.

Retail egg sales by volume increased 3.7% year on year [Kantar Worldpanel 52 w/e 9 October], the equivalent of about 204 million extra eggs, with some 34 million eaten every day.

The surge in egg sales built on several years of strong growth, said BEIC chairman Andrew Joret.
