Calls are growing for better labelling of eggs and egg products so consumers can understand their production method and country of origin.

Lib Dem MP Colin Breed last week tabled two Early Day Motions calling for eggs produced in new enriched cages to be labelled to differentiate them from eggs produced in other systems. Products containing imported eggs should also be clearly labelled as to production method, he said.

Breed's call comes as new research by British Lion Egg Products showed 80% of people wanted better labelling to help them make a more informed choice. British Lion is concerned new EU legislation in 2012 could mean more imports. "Consumers concerned about where their food comes from would be disappointed to know 'Made in the UK' is not a clear indication of provenance," said British Egg Products Association chairman Clive Frampton.
