The fresh produce industry is one step closer to putting the E.coli debacle behind it with the lifting of the EU import ban on certain varieties of Egyptian produce.

The ban was imposed on 7 July, after Egyptian fenugreek seeds were implicated in an outbreak of E.coli in Germany.

The Fresh Produce Consortium welcomed the lifting of the ban, which it said came just in time for the start of the Egyptian peas and beans season, but said the restrictions had been a "ridiculous mistake" in the first place.
