Emmett UK has posted a 6.7% fall in profits in the wake of tough trading conditions and the impact of bad weather on its harvest.

Pre-tax profits at the veg processor which supplies vegetables, salad and flowers to Tesco and Waitrose fell to £421,000 in the year to 26 February 2011, the latest accounts filed at Comp-anies House show.

Sales fell 21.7% to £30.8m, which Emmett attributed to its withdrawal from unprofitable lines to focus on more value-added products.

Trading conditions had remained tough as customers reacted to the economic situation, the directors said. "Prices on all products remained under pressure and promotional activity stepped up."

The unexpected frozen conditions in December 2010 had also put considerable pressure on the company's raw material supply, but it had still managed to satisfy all orders, the directors added.
