New scientific advice has confirmed the European Commission’s fears about the state of key fish stocks.

The state of EU waters will further boost the already predominant volumes sourced farther afield as well as the work of the Marine Stewardship Council in certifying sustainable fisheries.

As well as a total ban on fishing for North Sea cod, the independent International Council for the Exploration of the Sea recommends a similar ban on cod fishing in the Irish Sea and off the west coast of Scotland until stocks have recovered. ICES recommends a total ban on Irish Sea whiting.

ICES recommends rebuilding hake from Ireland down to Portugal, but a ban on fishing in more southern waters.

Rebuilding is advised for plaice in the North Sea, cod and plaice in the Celtic Sea and sole in the Western Channel and Bay of Biscay.

Some stocks such as North Sea haddock, mackerel and saithe are healthy.
