Scottish beef producers could be facing major opportunities on the European export market, according to new research.

Jim Walker, chairman of Quality Meat Scotland, said the independent study by Food from Britain shows there is a real chance to kickstart exports into Europe.

Speaking at the Scottish Simmental Club Beef open day, he called on the government to deliver on its commitments to reopen the export markets for beef.

“We already know the sales of Scotch beef are on the way up in the UK with consumers saying they value its taste and quality. Now the French are telling us they are desperate to have Scotch beef back on the menu and our research shows real opportunities exist to develop sales in Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany and Switzerland.”

He said export was vital for the industry in light of changes to the OTMS rule.
