Exports of South African avocados were 43% lower this season than last year after poor weather led to a reduction in the size of crops.

A total of 6.4 million cartons were exported this year compared with 11.9 million last year.

This year's crop was always going to be lower than 2010's, as South African avocado production is cyclical and went through a low-production year in 2011.

However, the crops were even lower than usual because of hail in many production areas. The UK imports 20% of the South African crop.
