Waitrose has ushered in Fairtrade Fortnight with a pledge to double sales of Fairtrade products this year.
It already stocks 96 Fairtrade lines, mostly bananas and fruit, tea, coffee and chocolate. It expects much of the growth to come from the switch to Faitrade bananas, which took place this week.
The Co-operative Group, was underlining its own Fairtrade credentials this week with people in gorilla suits handing out Fairtrade bananas in Southampton. It expects sales of the bananas to double this year to 44 million after it cut the price to match conventional fruit.
