The fruit is grown on the Finca Tres Marias farm, the first mango farm in the world to be awarded Fairtrade certification. It is situated in the poor south-western region of Ecuador.
AgroFair said the farm was important to the whole region because of the employment it offers to local people. It covers
140 hectares and employs 15 permanent workers together with about 100 seasonal workers during the harvest.
To comply with Fairtrade criteria, the farm management initiated a social programme, which involved paying workers an increased, fixed wage and ensuring they were entitled to social security benefits.
