Wholesale buyers have failed to make rigorous checks on meat imports with the result that chicken bulked up with water, pork and beef is still being sold one year after the problem was first exposed.

A Food Standards Agency survey and follow-up investigation has found that thousands of tonnes of chicken is still being bulked up to make them look bigger than they are.

While the practice is not illegal, misleading or inaccurate labels are.

The survey found that almost 75% was incorrectly marketed as fillet or breast and labels on more than half of the samples claimed to have a higher meat content than was actually the case.

Nearly half of the samples contained traces of DNA from pigs and all but one of these were labelled as halal.
