The East of England Co-operative Society has posted a 7% increase in like-for-like sales over the Christmas period.

The society said sales in the four weeks to 9 January were boosted by key offers on beer, wines and spirits, as well as an 86% uplift in sales of tinned confectionery. Home baking products were also top sellers.

"This is a sterling performance from our core business," said CEO Richard Samson. "Throughout the difficult weather conditions, our network of food stores has provided a lifeline to local communities, with a huge demand for basics."
