Speciality cakes and breads manufacturer Finsbury Food Group has revealed an interest in acquiring the cakes and speciality breads division of Northern Foods, put up for sale in May.

Dave Brooks, chief executive of Finsbury Food Group, said that the company would be taking a look at the Northern Foods division to see if its market strengths met its acquisition criteria.

Finsbury Food Group has been acquisitive in past years. Between 2002 and 2003 the company, whose sales reached £59.3m in 2005, acquired Memory Lane Cakes, Nicholas & Harris, the California Cake Company, Campbell's Cake Company and United Central Bakeries.

Meanwhile Paul Griffiths, MD of rival cake maker Inter Link Foods, said it had not approached Northern over the division, but added: "I expect that when it is ready, it will approach us."

Inter Link Foods' sales rose 33% to £130m on pre-tax profit down 2.7% to £4.4m in the year to 6 May.
