New automated equipment is helping New Zealand’s Zespri cut costs.
The kiwifruit importer has invested in machinery from Sinclair which can test the firmness of fruit at its Belgian facilities.
The non-destructive Sinclair IQ firmness tester allows Zespri to sort fruit quickly and more effectively than by hand, checking up to 10 per second.
Philip Marechal, Zespri Europe operations manager, said: “The kiwi fruit season is unpredictable and so our labour
requirements varied significantly. It was always difficult to plan resources and sorting fruit by hand was both labour intensive and costly.
“The IQ system has enabled us to make significant time and cost savings.”
