Three major environmental bodies have called on the Scottish Executive to take action to ensure the sustainability of fish feeds used in salmon farms.
WWF Scotland, the Scottish Wildlife Trust and RSPB Scotland want an end to the use of unsustainably-fished species such as blue whiting.
They say alternatives should be developed and the Scottish fish farming industry should develop a marketing strategy based on a sustainable brand.
Brian Simpson, chief executive of Scottish Quality Salmon, said: “We are fully committed to sustainable feed. Members have made major progress towards replacing fish meal with quality plant protein.”
