A Hungarian seafood product has scooped the prestigious international Sial d’Or award for commercially successful innovation.

Judges at the Sial 2012 exhibition in Paris yesterday (21 October) gave the award to Selfish Trout with herb butter - a portion of ready-to-cook fresh fish. Launched by PLP Seafood Hungary Ltd last August, the product comes in vacuum packaging that helps extend the shelf life of the fish, and can be cooked in the oven in 10 minutes with no need to open the bag.

Selfish Trout, which took first place in the Sial d’Or fresh non-dairy category in May this year, beat eight other finalists, in categories including savoury frozen products, fresh dairy products and wine, to the coveted Sial d’Or award. Two UK products had been in the running for the top spot: Britvic’s Turbo Tango had earlier won the non-alcoholic drinks category, while Mondelez International’s Guzzle Puzzle was voted best sweet grocery product.

The awards were judged by a panel of journalists from magazines including The Grocer, representing 29 global markets.
