The viability of EC proposals to end fish discards at sea has been questioned by MPs.

The Environment, Food & Rural Affairs Committee issued its report on EU proposals for the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy on Friday. Everyone was appalled by the levels of discarding, said committee chair Anne McIntosh.

However she added: “We are concerned that a kneejerk reaction to the public outcry will do more harm than good.” The last thing the committee wanted to see was unwanted fish in the sea becoming unwanted fish in landfill, she added.

The committee has called for a more gradual approach, based on sound science and local experience.
