Lower prices have boosted demand for Norwegian salmon, driving up exports to the UK by almost a third.
The volume exported rose 30.5% year-on-year to 10,096 tonnes in the third quarter of 2012 [Norwegian Seafood Council]. A significant year-on-year price reduction had sparked a substantial increase in demand, said Johan Kvalheim, UK director of the NSC. “This in turn caused a more moderate, but still highly significant value increase of 10.1% to £31.4m.”
Cod exports grew 2.8% in volume in the third quarter to 2,031 tonnes year-on-year, and haddock rose 7.9% to 7,136 tonnes. Value sales were up 6% to £6.9m and 2.1% to £13.4m respectively.
