Sainsbury’s and Tesco increased the price of their bananas by 16% this week - the first shift in banana prices this year.

One kilogram of loose bananas now costs 79p in both supermarkets, up from 68p []. As The Grocer went to press, Asda and Morrisons were still selling bananas for 68p/kg.

The price rises in Tesco and Sainsbury’s mark the first time the price of 1kg of loose bananas has changed since December 2011, when the mults increased their prices from 52p/kg to 68p/kg.

The average price of loose bananas across the big four now stands at 74p/kg, up from 68p/kg.

A spokesman for Sainsbury’s said it was committed to providing “great value” to its customers and stressed its bananas were still “keenly priced” despite the increase.

“Unlike those sold by some of our competitors, our bananas are Fairtrade-certified, meaning that they benefit communities across the developing world,” he added.
