Hot oat cereals, soft continental cheese and pineapples have made it into the UK’s shopping basket.

The items were added to the ONS’ basket of goods and services that is used to calculate UK inflation.

Other food and drink items included for the first time were bags of branded chocolate sweets and four-can packs of stout. However, candy coated chocolate and bags of boiled or jellied sweets were dropped.

Items that have grown in popularity such as tablet computers and teenage fiction also made the grade for the first time, in favour of casserole dishes and step ladders.
