Wine narrowed the gap with confectionery considerably this week, but didn't come close to unseating it from the top spot.

Confectionery has now been the most-promoted category for four weeks in a row, wine's longest stint away from the top. However, wine is gaining ground, with only 46 fewer deals this week compared with 80 last week.

Cadbury was by far the most promoted confectionery brand, with 103 deals, 60 more than nearest competitor Nestlé. Tesco was the place to go for chocoholics, boasting 83 offers.

The total value of featured-space confectionery deals was approaching four figures, at £946.26. This week, anyone with a sweet enough tooth and a strong stomach could snaffle the whole lot for £688.89, a saving of £257.35.

In most categories, activity was largely unchanged since last week, though the total number of promotions fell slightly from 1,880 to 1,831. Energy drinks were the highest new entrant to the top 50, in at 35th from 52nd, though quiches' jump from 94th to 47th was the biggest weekly change.

Asda's £1 Goodfella's pizza was the best offer in this week's top 50, offering a 55.2% saving, while Tesco's 2-for-£12 on Magners 12-packs offered the largest cash saving, of £12.98. Tesco offered the most deals and the biggest total saving in the top 50 this week.

Buying all 50 of this week's top deals would cost £149.47, a £121.72 saving on the rsp of £271.18.
