Wine has been knocked off the top spot for the first time since The Grocer first published its promotions league table in September. Its conqueror was confectionery, which had over 165 lines on promotion in featured space as Hallowe’en deals reached their zenith. Mars was the biggest promoter, with 44 of its lines on offer it was well ahead of Cadbury’s 25.

Morrisons led the other retailers, with 37 of the 165 offers, but Asda was close behind with 35. Buying all of this week’s confectionery offers would cost £470.70, a 35% discount on the rsp of £724.69 – and earn the buyer hero status among local trick-or-treaters.

Appropriately enough, Hallowe’en week also proved a good one for spirits, which jumped from 12th place to 6th. This was largely thanks to Sainsbury's and Asda, which had 20 and 14 of this week’s 41 spirits offers. Winter warmer Baileys was the most-promoted spirit, with seven deals.

This week’s best bargain was a two-for-£1.50 deal on Nivea shower gel at Tesco, which represented a 60% saving off the rsp. The biggest cash saving, £29.64, was on a case of six bottles of Mumm Cordon Rouge Champagne, though a shopper would have to splash out £118.50 to take advantage.

Somerfield had the most offers in the top 50, with 13 of this week’s top deals, but Waitrose offered the biggest saving of £51.62 to anyone buying all of its deals. Buying all of this week’s top 50 offers would cost £278.20, a 46.2% saving on the £449.07 rsp.
