The chilled ready meals market is worth more than £1bn and has grown 7.1% in the past year. Convenience, classic recipes and meal deals have helped drive category growth.

Italian and Indian meals account for nearly 50% of the category between them and have driven overall growth, while Greek meals are up 16.2% albeit from a low base.

Own label accounts for more than 90% of the category.

Branded sales are growing faster than own-label, albeit from a smaller base. l Promotions have increased year-on-year, with over 40% of sales through promotions, up from just over 30%.

Tesco, Morrisons, Waitrose and the discounters are growing ahead of the market, although they all (except Waitrose) continue to undertrade.
