"There are lots of great chocolate companies, but not many great sugar confectionery companies," says founder Justine Cather.
Her latest launch is aimed squarely at the growing boxed chocolates market. Burnt Sugar's first gift boxes roll out exclusively to WHSmith travel stores this month. And the company is hoping to get them into Waitrose after Christmas. The boxes come in two variants, crumbly vanilla fudge and milk chocolate honeycomb fudge (rsp: £5). Both are new flavours for the brand.
"If you're looking for a gift, chocolates can be very samey," she says. But Cather acknowledges that, at the moment, a lot of sugar confectionery can't compete with chocolate. "Sugar is dominated by mass-produced sweets, and many retro sweets are just repackaged to give them a traditional look. But our fudge is how you would make it in your own kitchen."
