The hot summer has helped the market pick up. Good value sales were due largely to price rises, although a fall in the number of shoppers and a drop in frequency of purchase affected volume sales.

In line with Kantar's increased Consumer Confidence Index, shoppers appear to have started to move away from their recessionary purchasing behaviour and are trading up to more premium products this year. As a result, smoothies outperformed juice sales.

Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons grew ahead of the market, with Tesco and Sainsbury's combined adding £38m to the overall juices and smoothies sector.

Waitrose had a remarkable year, showing value growth of 11.2% (£6.8m), but Netto sales suffered, due in part to store disposals and conversions.
