At the risk of starting a war of words with lovers of Italian cuisine, it is worth pointing out that their most famous dish is actually Greek.

Ancient Greeks enjoyed a flatbread topped with herbs and onions, while Persian soldiers in the 5th century BC are said to have baked flatbread on their shields and then covered it with cheese and dates.

Centuries later Italians developed topped flatbread into the pizza we know today particularly following the introduction of tomatoes to the country in the 16th century. But it still took them another 300 years to invent the pizza margherita.
