Despite a dramatic drop in promotional activity from Morrisons (and a 79% decline in promotions for own-label sauces and condiments across the retailers) the overall number of featured space offers in the category is up year on year, driven by Heinz and Hellmann's. Premier Foods' Branston came in a respectable third.

"The Holy Grail is to grow both value and volume that's what we're all striving towards," says Carine San Juan at Premier Foods. "But in the current climate it's difficult to get real volume growth that's not going to be promotionally driven."

Many of the smaller brands, however, favoured methods of promotion other than featured space. This month (September) sees the launch of Levi Roots' biggest ever on-pack promotion in support of the original Reggae Reggae Sauce.
