English grow for French English growers are being contracted to produce lambs lettuce or mache for Soleco's new prepared salad factory opened in partnership with the Williams Group near Litchfield. Previously, lambs lettuce for the Florette brand has had to be imported from Normandy. And UK director Sylvain Finel said the company, exhibiting at Food and Drink Expo's Fresh Produce Fair, was seeking to source at least half its salad leaves from the UK, and has already contracted for 2,500 tonnes of crops for this summer. The factory is already approaching its 6,000 tonne target capacity. Out of season salads are now imported in bulk from the southern Mediterranean. But just how long the prepared sector can sustain an annual growth rate of 30% may be questionable as further companies extend their commitment. {{FRESH PRODUCE }}
