A new food investigations unit has been set up by Ireland’s Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine.

The unit, headed by a senior superintending veterinary officer, will determine whether matters should be referred back to relevant inspection areas of the department and, if an investigation is warranted, whether it should be conducted by the unit or referred to the police.

The new unit includes the functions previously undertaken by the department’s special investigations division.

Announcing the unit this week, minister Simon Coveney described it as “a strong, cohesive, consolidated and effective investigation capability.”
