The Co-op has become the latest major retailer to sign up to The Grocer’s Waste Not Want Not Campaign to battle food waste.
The retailer joins Tesco (also the campaign’s retail sponsor), Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl, Waitrose, M&S and Ocado among retailers that have backed the campaign.
Launched in May 2016, the major food waste campaign aims to tackle the 1.9 million tonnes wasted each year by the UK supply chain by encouraging transparency, collaboration and co-operation among industry.
Its core goals include the doubling of redistribution to 100,000 tonnes by 2018 and to call for government incentives to encourage greater redistribution of edible surplus food to charity.
“As a proud signatory of the Courtauld Commitment 2025, we are already making huge developments in this area, both from a waste prevention and food redistribution point of view,” said Co-op Food chief executive Jo Whitfield.
“I am delighted for the Co-op to formally support The Grocer’s campaign.”
