Sir; Week after week I read about increases in bread prices due to the price of wheat. Now biofuels are being blamed (The Grocer, 24 March, p11).

As a chicken farmer I am at the mercy of the wheat market - 65% of my chickens' diet is wheat, but no one seems to care about my cost increases.

I might be accused of being a whinging farmer but I am a businessman trying to make a living by growing chickens for the UK retail market.

Put the humble loaf to one side a moment and consider the cost increases for chicken farms. My feed costs have increased by 4.7p in the last 12 months and my return per kg has increased just 1.1p.

Retailers - if you want quality British chicken on your shelves why won't you pay a reasonable price for it?
