The Fresh Produce Consortium has slammed government plans to increase plant health inspections at UK airports, claiming they would leave fruit and veg suppliers facing £250,000 a year in extra costs at Heathrow alone.

The FPC said the risk of plant health issues from fresh produce imported into the UK were "minimal" and did not warrant a regime that would put additional pressure on UK fresh suppliers.

It added that the EU was planning to review its plant health regime, making changes to the UK regime premature.
