UK retailers will soon have South African Hass avocados up to six weeks earlier in the year, as a new variety is set to go on sale in the UK for the first time.

Westfalia’s UK subsidiary Greencell will start supplying the Carmen-Hass avocado into Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose in the coming weeks.

The traditional South African Hass season stretches from April to September, but Carmen - new to the UK - is available from March, supplementing other Hass supply sources.

“Volumes will initially be small, but as volumes increase, this new variety will offer a significant benefit to the consumer at a key time of supply,” said a Westfalia spokesman.
