Campaigning chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has praised the government for its part in securing the European Parliament’s support for banning fish discards at sea.

This morning, MEPs voted in favour of including a ban on discarding fish at sea in the reformed Common Fisheries Policy.

A discards ban was the subject of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s Fish Fight campaign, launched two year ago.

“All credit to British MEPs and [fisheries minister] Richard Benyon for the part they’ve played in this result, helped by the hard work the British fleet is doing on reducing discards,” Fearnley-Whittingstall wrote on his Fish Fight blog this afternoon.

He urged supporters to “keep fighting” to ensure the implementation of the ban is rigorous and effective and achieves its principal aim of eliminating wasted fish and helping the industry towards a more sustainable future.
