The Marine Stewardship Council has launched new sustainability awards that recognise retailers and suppliers “helping to transform the world’s oceans to a sustainable basis”.

The winners of this year’s inaugural awards were: Sainsbury’s, named MSC fish retailer of the year; Waitrose, best MSC-certified fish counter; M&S, MSC high-street convenience retailer of the year; Birds Eye, top MSC frozen fish brand; and Princes, top MSC canned fish brand.

“Each has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to MSC-certified sustainable seafood, investing time and energy in sourcing sustainably,” said MSC country manager Toby Middleton. ”By offering their customers MSC-certified seafood, they are helping to transform fishing practices around the world. To date, MSC certified fisheries around the world have made over 400 improvements. Those changes wold not be possible without strong and visible support from supermarkets and seafood brands.”

The award winners were announced on World Oceans Day this Sunday (8 June).
