Argentinean blueberry growers shipped nearly 700 tonnes more blueberries to Europe last year than they did in 2010.
By mid-December, 4,740,559 tonnes of the berries had been shipped to Europe, the Argentinean Blueberry Committee (ABC) said, compared with 4,049,098 tonnes the previous year.
In 2010, nearly two-thirds of all Argentinean blueberries shipped to Europe came to the UK.
ABC manager Ines Pelaez said the UK blueberry market had been particularly buoyant and was now worth a total of £140m.
“Research shows that 52% of UK blueberry consumption is for breakfast, so we believe there is a great opportunity to develop other parts of the UK market in the future,” she said.
