More consumers are cooking their bangers in frying pans and ovens as healthy eating takes a backseat in the downturn.

In the year to May 2010, 23% of sausages were fried, up 2% year-on-year, and 21% were baked, up 8%, reveals the latest data from Kantar Worldpanel. Grilling remains the most popular cooking method but is down 1% to 39%. Sales were up 6.5% to £651.5m on volumes up 1.8% to 190,700 tonnes.

The Agriculture and Horiculture Development Board added that the premium sector was in strong growth and now accounted for 31% of volume.
