A campaign by Welsh farmers to speed up the legalisation of 'smokies' - or skin-on sheepmeat - has received support from Welsh secretary Paul Murphy.
Murphy has written to the Food Standards Agency backing calls by the Farmers' Union of Wales for research into the safety of smokies to be sped up. The FUW said it was taking the FSA too long to sign off on the safety of the meat, which is popular among African and Asian populations.
The union believes there could be a significant market in the principality for smokies. Controversy surrounds whether residues from veterinary medicines are present in sheepskin.
