Banana giant Fyffes is calling on the European Commission to restrict the size of import quotas awarded to suppliers following EU enlargement.
Chief executive David McCann said that when Austria, Sweden and Finland joined the EU in 1995, too many licences were awarded, which led to a price drop.
The statement was made as the company reported profits before exceptionals up 7% from €63m to €67.7m for the year to December 31.
Sales were 5% up, from €1.84bn to €1.92bn.
