The joint administrators of Game Group have announced 277 of the videogame retailer’s stores are to close immediately.

PricewaterhouseCoopers said a review of the ongoing operational needs of the business had made it necessary to close the sites across the UK and Ireland. It revealed that 2,104 store staff would be made redundant.

The retailer’s remaining 333 stores, employing 2,814 people, would stay open as normal while PwC continued to try and find a purchaser for the business.

“The recent job losses are regrettable but will place the company in a stronger position while we explore opportunities to conclude a sale,” said Mike Jervis, joint administrator and partner at PwC. “Our priority is to continue trading the business as normal while we continue to pursue a sale.”
