Fresh venison promoted Venison faded from market view in recent years after being hyped as a safer alternative to beef in the early days of BSE. But deer are still of importance to parts of the UK rural economy. The commercial significance of these animals has been highlighted by foot and mouth with the sudden prohibition of sales to overseas customers hitting the export- dependent wild venison sector, perhaps harder than the sheep or pig industries. In response, the Forestry Commission has joined forces with processor Rick Bestwick of Chesterfield to mount a new promotion of fresh venison from public forests to butchers, delicatessen and game retailers. A euphemistic statement from the Commission's forest management officer Dr John Morgan notes that with FMD preventing exports "the home market is now benefiting from a much greater choice of venison products". {{MEAT }}
