Greenvale's Peruvian potato Mayan Gold will go in-store at the end of the year. UK plantings of the Phurejas variety have gone well and production is being boosted. Availability will be year-round.
Mayan Gold, which boasts a nutty flavour, creamy texture and golden flesh, would be used in pre-prepared products, said Greenvale operations director Angus Armstrong, because it had different cooking traits to other potatoes.
Greenvale is also set to introduce a potato snack - the Chip Twister, a spiral of fried potato on a skewer. The company also wants to produce a ready-to-bake variant for retail.
