The Scottish government has formally opposed a Faroe Islands application for MSC certification for its mackerel fishery.

It claims that the fishery fails to meet the high standards necessary for MSC accreditation and its failure to do so threatens the very sustainability of the stock.

MSC certification of the Faroese fishery would also impact the credibility of Scotland's own MSC-certified Scottish Western mackerel fishery, it said. "The mackerel fishery is now our most valuable and we will not sit on our hands and see its reputation damaged."
