US aid programmes have been effective in establishing Egypt as an increasingly important grape producer. This season nearly 5,000 tonnes of Thompson, Flame and Superior Seedless have been shipped with the majority destined for Europe, particularly the UK. There are now plans to develop later varieties such as Red Globe and Crimson Seedless. An improved infrastructure which includes more refrigerated stores necessary to hold fruit during the summer is also creating changes in distribution. A greater volume can now be shipped by sea reducing costs. {{FRESH PRODUCE }}
