The move towards obtaining exclusive selling rights for registered fruit varieties has taken another step forward with the announcement that Capespan arm Capestar will control and licence new table grape varieties produced by the Stellenbosch Institute. It has awarded 10 year rights to Capespan which will handle fruit already being grown in other southern hemisphere countries as well as Egypt, Israel and Turkey. South Africa's own grape industry has also changed its pattern over the last 10 years with a greater emphasis on seedless varieties. Around 35% of the export crop is based on nationally grown cultivars such as Sun Red and Regal Seedless. Meanwhile Capespan has also been trialling grapes from Argentina and Mexico under its Bella Nova brand. Its Outspan label will also be appearing on Argentine lemons where there are plans to ship over 200,000 cartons. {{FRESH PRODUCE }}
